Last Friday, our Varsity Football team faced off against the Lone Jack Mules for their homecoming. Both teams were 0-5 going in and looking for their first wins. Unlike the Mules however, the Tigers were much more prepared for the fight after going through a tough first 5 games. The battle was one sided from the start after the Tigers made the Mules go 3 and out to start the game. The Tigers then scored first from a deep pass to Brody Best to take the lead 6-0. The rest of the game would be lopsided with the Tigers overall winning with a score of 56-18!

Sophomore Brody Best and Senior Lucas Waterworth led the Tigers on offense with 3 TDs apiece with Sophomore, Johnny Hampton, throwing the ball on all the Touchdowns. Brody Best started the game to replace Senior Trotter Hughes after he went down with a concussion last Friday against Tipton, but he stepped up big time with plays on offense and even an interception on defense. Scoring didn’t just come on offense however, when Sophomore Maddox Blystone returned a pick 6 to seal the game late in the 4th quarter. Sophomore, Johnny Hampton, also had a big day setting the Wellington-Napoleon record for Touchdown passes in a game.

I was able to sit down with Johnny after the game on Monday and ask him some questions about his teammates and the record. To start I first asked him who his favorite receiver to pass to is and why? His response was “Probably Lucas because of all the extra time we put in outside of school and during the summer.” My next questions were about how he found out and felt about the record. “I didn’t know until the day after when my dad told me about it.” His reaction to the news was “I was kinda shocked and excited because I didn’t really know what the record was or that I was even close to breaking it.”

The Wellington-Napoleon Varsity Football team hopes to carry the momentum into the back part of their season where they face off against the Windsor Greyhounds and then the Penny Hornets for homecoming!
