Story By Brilynn Zykan

On January 20th, Trump's first day in office he signed an executive order to change the Gulf of Mexico’s name to the Gulf of America. Trump ordered the interior secretary to make the change within the next 30 days. Trump says he wants to honor his pledge of “American Greatness.”

Some Mexican natives are not happy with the change. “He’s changing the name of a cultural and natural heritage of Mexico since the 16th century, when the United States hadn’t even been formed,” said Francisco Javier Remes Sánchez. The Gulf of Mexico first appeared on a world map in 1550 and has been the most common name since the mid seventeenth century.

To be clear, the name will only be changed in America. Trump doesn’t have the authority to change the name for the rest of the world. The “Gulf of America” will only be recognized in America.

“I think it's stupid. I don’t think it should change after being called the Gulf of Mexico for so many years.” said Kirsten Lee when talking about how she felt about the name change. “I mean it’s not affecting me, so I don’t care.” said Maddox Blystone.

Whether you think it's stupid or not, google maps will officially be changing the name from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America very soon.
