Story By Joe Heater
Last weekend was the opening week of rifle hunting season. Many of our own Wellington students spent the weekend trying to find the perfect deer. A newcomer to hunting this year is Senior Haden Terrill. He spent the first time going out with his grandpa. “I had lots of fun, my grandpa was across the field and we were out there for about 3 days.” He does plan on processing it on his own with Grandpa Gary. “Yeah after we process it we plan on European mounting it.” European mounting is the process of mounting a deer’s skull without any skin on it. The rifle he used was a 7 mag and they plan on going back out this weekend.
A business getting lots of customers at this time of the year is Nadlers. If you ever drive
past, you can see a line of cars stacking down 131. An employee who comes back to help every year is Junior Braedon Gentry. “We are very busy during this time of year, we have to ask for people to come help.” I asked on average how many do you think they go through in a day. “I would say a little more than 200 per day. I think last year we did more than 2000 deer.” Braedon’s least favorite part is getting deer brains all over him, and the best is that they get free food.
An experienced hunter who looks forward to this time of the year is Senior Levi Wallace. His biggest deer over the years has been a 10 point buck. When asked about how the season has been so far he responded with, “I’m already done so that's a good thing. There have been a ton of deer.” His favorite part is going by himself and just enjoying the nature around him. The gun of choice is a 243 Rifle to hunt, and rifle is his favorite hunting season. Good luck to everyone going hunting this year and be safe!
