Story By Joe Heater

This Friday our Varsity Football team has the chance to compete for the I-70 Conference Championship. For the first year being 8-man and rejoining the I-70 Conference, the Tigers have not backed down from the challenge. In Conference play we have gone 4-0 while having a 221 to 60 point differential.

But on the other side of the field the Concordia Orioles also have gone 4-0 in Conference play and are looking to take us down. The Wellington VS Concordia rivalry has been going on for a while and us coming back down to 8-man has sparked it back up. In our school history there hasn’t been a team we have played more than the Orioles. The early 2000's were full of us going head to head in the playoffs and regular season.

One person who is definitely fired up about this Friday is Coach Hampton. “When I first came to Wellington it was always us and them playing for a conference championship, and for several years we had to go through each other in districts.” Concordia is also a team we have been playing for a long time, starting in 1967. “We have played Concordia more than any other school in our team’s history, so it is a long standing rivalry,” Coach Hampton stated. Overall we have played the Orioles 56 times, and are winning the matchup 37-19.

Other than the conference championship, this Friday is also Senior Nights for the Football Team, Band Members, and Cheerleaders. This should give the seniors on the team a little more energy for the game, knowing this is the last regular season game they will be playing at Bodenhamer Field. The game starts at 7 PM on October 25, with Senior Night happening before the game. We hope to see all of you there!
